I had been working in academia for about 10 years, doing my best to juggle between academic subjects (cognitive psychology, psycholinguistics, a bit of cognitive neuroscience) and an ongoing interest in e-learning.

Keeping on top of both proved a bit of a struggle. I enjoyed research and teaching very much, but for various reasons, I ended up deciding to give up my academic career to become a freelance e-learning developer. In general terms, the approach I take is one where I try and develop software that encourage students and teachers to create and use their own learning resources.

My first language is French.

Semantic Web - Towards a Science of the World Wide Web

I attended two talks on the semantic web by Professor James Hendler, about a year ago. Lectures slides are available on the UoE distinguished lectures webpage. Here are my notes.
The important information for a general public. Corporate Semantic Web (making good money by using data integration/linkable concepts technologies) starts to flourish.

For educators like you, once you have the slides, check out the end…

OK, I understand you! My misunderstanding was that you had some preconceived progam for certain Web 2.0 skills that you wanted to "map" in a scout model. I see that you are talking about any curricular plan with a scout type structure. It is similar it seems to the overall plan of WaT with the Wat$ program - by the way, did you know your e-buddy Kenny was a winner? In fact, our distrcit is trying a blogging experiement with gaggle accounts for students and I just won an award today for my efforts. (Actually, I think I won becasue they had to give the award to somebody and I might have been one of the few that accomplished the task....and because they feel sorry for me) Anyway, this might be a place to experiement with a type of "rank" advancement with awards, tangible and intangible for both students and teacher/facilitators. I'll run this by the BigWigs for their consideration. Great to e-converse with you and I wish you well in the Land of the Hobbits!

P. S. I downloaded FreeMind this morning and have only just started to play around with it. What we use for this sort of thing is Inspiration, but thanks for the tip - I look forward to being a FreeMind Master!

Great to hear from you!

Misunderstadning #1: No.....not your skills...what skills would the kids/students utilizing this type of structure be learring? What do you consider a "significant" area.

Misunderstanding #2: I am familiar with outcomes and objectives and writing them.....I just didn't fully understand the outcomes you had in mind. Bloom and I are old friends!

Are you a full-fledged Kiwi now?

From your previous post.........applying a scout-type of structure to on-line social networking for pupils.

What would these pupils be learning? Are we talking about Social Networking skills or standard curricular topics or something other and otherwise?

One big unit,

such as a standard classroom - 25 to 35 students?

....2 kids taking some level of responsibility, badges to mark acquisition of skills in significant areas.

This is it! What skills and what significant areas. Thanks!

I have some target audiences that this structure might be used as an experiment:

1. A group of folks like me - that have a duty to be teaching other teachers how to teach 21st Century skills with a look toward a 22nd Century economy to digital learning, technology native students

2. Teachers that need to master skills on a fairly steep learning curve and timetable - an accelereated game of catch-up!

3. Students bored to death with subject matter based instruction that are at-risk of dropping out

4. Students sentenced to a disciplinary campus that really are finished without a new, fresh approach to learning.

Let's talk!

My head is spinning at the prospect of your Web 2.0 Skills Acquisition marriage to Scout Structure idea! What a brilliant woman! However...school starts and I will have to squeeze this idea into the available cracks in my pointy little head!

Marielle,

Edinburgh, what a great place! I really enjoyed the time I spent in your great city. The people are so warm, friendly and outgoing. I stayed at a awesome Bed & Breakfast in Kirkliston. It is great to see that WaT is reaching out to our friends on the other side of the big pond.
