Meri Walker's Profile

Meri Walker (mawstools)
59, Female
United States
Hometown:
Ashland, Oregon
About Me:
I'm an independent management consultant, trainer, and executive coach who wants to make sure that no one I work with ever again feels a need to apologize for doing things in a way that releases their natural creativity and generosity.

With more than 25 years successful experience helping leaders create lasting value with their organizations, I've become an outspoken proponent of inclusive communication and systemic improvement as the only sustainable route to success in the increasingly diverse global economy.

My clients have included: IBM, AMD, 3M, The University of Texas System, Texas A&M University, Shell Oil , Leadership Austin, Austin's great public television station, KLRU-TV, the Austin Diocese, the National Disability Rights Network, the National Education Association, and many, many other midsized businesses and nonprofits.

I speak regularly across this country and Europe and consult with CEOs, Executive Directors and senior managers to help them create lasting value by skillfully leveraging their natural strengths and the strengths of the people they depend on.

In 2001, I coauthored a Berret Kohler business title, "Teamwork is an Individual Skill." I have taught and published widely on responsible relationship, results-based management, inclusive communication, and how to make the most effective use of your natural strengths and the strengths of those you depend on.

In the fall of 2006, after 25 fast-paced years homebased in Austin, Texas, I relocated to Southern Oregon where I'm stepping up my participation in the global economy while helping strengthen local economies in the Pacific Northwest.

I'm also writing a new book about free and very cheap Web 2.0 tools and strategies that teachers and other subject matter experts can use NOW to publish and sell your own information products directly to learners in the Web 2.0 space.

I look forward to meeting many new people here and discovering new ways to use our natural strengths to share all we know - and all we want to know - with greater ease, grace, joy... and a sense of humor. God knows how much the world's children need our help.

Time marches - I mean FLIES - on, doesn't it?

It's hard for me to believe that in less than 12 months so much new has happened! This community here seems to be making its transition over to the new WAT membership site and I'm delighted about that. You can access my personal page at the new WAT site by…

It's time to crank up my participation here at WAT

Okay. No more waiting!

I've been putting off blogging here on my page at WAT for three months now because I'm having trouble keeping track of all the different hats I'm wearing and I have kept wanting to feel more "organized" before starting.

Well, it's not happening.

Since I moved up here to Oregon to find some peace and quiet and fresh air, I'm doing more new stuff than ever and doing new stuff is never organized.

Between the fresh air clearing out the cobwebs in…

Meri! I would love to help with whatever you need. I miss Austin as well. You might remember I'm a technology buff and there is certainly not a lot of that around here! (That could also be construed as an opportunity.)

Anyway, my parents are 82 & 83 with multiple challenges and my sister and her family are here in NM as well. My personal email is jean@kineticchange.com. (The website is not up yet but the email is. Please feel free to send me yours so that we aren't clogging the network.

Enjoy!

Hi Meri, about the "make a comic" you mentioned in your message, I assume you were referring to the one on this gallery. That one is not mine. You can find an easy to customize version on my blog at WAT. Looking forward talking to you next week.

Your teacher tube video is great! Well, that's spot on the reasons I left University. I was asked to teach in a way I knew to be inefficient. The cherry on the cake was the day I was put in a position I had to fail a student based on the quality of the work I was given (last year = no degree to him), not because of his lack of abilities but because of the deficits of the teaching infrastructure. They gave him his degree... and kept their methods unchanged.

They are wrong. Some teachers are ready to do what they ask for... but they are not always supported by the hierarchy (the ones from the older generation, who has little time to take up information about what can be done). Unfortunately the very slow change of rate of many university departments is not only negatively impacting on the quality of the teaching (not in synch with today's learning styles) but also negatively impacting on the quality of the research. The problem I faced was the lack of adequate infrastructure to support researchers efforts. Funding in academia is based on a research paper. I research. I write. I publish. That's the end, I archive my work and move onto something else. To encourage the development of software and tools you need a completely different funding model, to take into account the cost of support and long term maintenance. They haven't adapted their structure yet.

Somebody on some blog wrote something along the line of "public (on the web) education to replace schools". Why not. If (some) Universities fails to adapt to the changes in our society, this may happen.

I guess that just goes to show that we are all prone to accepting our own stereotypical responses to things. I know that most of the Great State of Oregon is semi-arid, but I prefer to put everyone there in the deep green of the west of the Cascades section. Also it is interesting that I could have googlemapped your fair city to discover its location......I am always yammerin' on about how technology has fundamentally changed our lives......yep, I yam what I yam, a real technology immigrant.
