Best Practices in Simulation Planning

At the recent International Conference on Residency Education, several speakers emphasized the importance of planning when using expensive simulation labs. Residents who train exclusively on high fidelity simulators frequently complain about the complexity and confusion of learning in this manner.

Making the IMPLICIT (Unconscious) EXPLICIT (Conscious)

I have been thinking about how we help students become aware of the thinking processes (pattern making, creative analysis) that we use everyday to solve problems. These processes have become habits that we rarely think about but students who see us travel from A-H see something magical or worse think we are taking shortcuts because we don't show them the underlying knowledge we use.

Building a Collaborative Environment

One of the most frequent issues raised by instructors who are trying to move from a teacher-centred to a team-centred classroom is “How do I get students to collaborate effectively?”

Twitter in HealthCare

Several articles have recently come to my attention that I wanted to share with you about how Twitter is being used by physicians, hospitals and other healthcare providers.

Get your students making films

From the Utube site:

In a world where people are often divided by borders, differences and conflict, it's easy to lose sight of what we all have in common. Pangea seeks to overcome that -- to help people see themselves in others -- through the power of film.

In virtually every culture, movies hold an extraordinary power to inspire human emotion, from sadness and fear to laughter and hope. They connect us powerfully to the characters on screen and enable us to see the world th…

Deirdre,
Thanks for your comment! People our age as you know are about as stubborn as it gets. We think we know everything and I have noticed its harder for us to focus. I'm not sure if I can provide you with any insight that you do not already know. A lot of time I like to be in "control" which by that I mean very involved. I would try and take that route, let them take a hold of the class or discussion a bit more and sit back a relax some. Thats the first idea that has came to mind. Let me know if you choose to use this or use this method already. Ill be glad to share more as things pop up =)

Terrific to welcome you! Many years ago (probably in the mid 80s), I spoke at an education conference in Saskatoon. I was given the gift of a lovely hand-made plate, which I have to this day and cherish. Wonderful people! Lovely scenery. Good memories!
